A BETTER WAY TO READ THIS GUIDE

QUICK RESET

WHY THIS MATTERS

Most training problems aren't really about a "bad dog." Usually it comes down to unclear communication, mixed signals, or asking for more than the dog's ready for. Small changes in how you train make a real difference.

HOW TO USE IT

This guide gives you five fixes you can start using today. Don't try to tackle all five at once. Pick whichever one sounds most familiar, work on it for a few days, then move to the next.

START WITH MISTAKE 3

TIMING CHANGES EVERYTHING.

it is one of the fastest ways to make your communication clearer and improve what your dog understands.

WHAT GOES WRONG & WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

THE FIVE MISTAKES

WHAT GOES WRONG

CORRECTING THE BEHAVIOR WITHOUT TEACHING THE REPLACEMENT

Telling your dog "no" only does half the job. if your dog jumps, pulls, barks, or grabs things and all they hear is "no", they still don't know what to do instead.

01

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

pair every correction with a replacement behavior. jumping? Ask for four paws on the floor or a. sit before they get attention. Pulling? Reward movement with you instead of just fight =ing the leash. Reward the behavior you actually want. especially when your dog gets it right on their own.

BOTTOM LINE

Don't just stop the wrong behavior. Show your dog what should happen instead.

WHAT GOES WRONG

BEING INCONSISTENT WITH RULES

Dogs learn patterns.if pulling's fine on one walk but corrected on the next, or jumping's funny with one person and off limits with another, your dog can't keep up.

02

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

Pick a small set of house rules everyone sticks to. Same cues, same consequences, every time. Decide what earns access to food, doors, greetings, and freedom, and keep your response calm no matter your mood that day.

BOTTOM LINE

clear rules only work when they stay the same from person to person and day to day.

WHAT GOES WRONG

GETTING THE TIMING WRONG

dogs connect consequences to whatever's happening right then. Feedback that comes late gets connected tot he wrong thing, and the goes for rewards

03

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

MArk good behavior the instant it happens when a clear word like "yes" or a clicker. if you're interrupting unwanted, do it while's happening, then guide your dog to the right choice. Your dog can't connect a correction to something that happened five minutes  ago.

BOTTOM LINE

clear rules only work when they stay the same from person to person and day to day.

WHAT GOES WRONG

GIVING TOO MUCH FREEDOM TOO SOON

Freedom's great, but too much too early just gives your dog more chances to practice bad habits. And repeated behavior get stronger, wanted or not.

04

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

Use gates, place work, and leashes to manage the environment while you're teaching. Expand freedom gradually as your dog earns it. Think of structure as a temporary tool, not a punishment.

BOTTOM LINE

Freedom should grow with reliability. Structure helps your dog get there.

WHAT GOES WRONG

EXPECTING REAL WORLD OBEDIENCE BEFORE YOU'VE BUILT IT

A dog that sits in the kitchen hasn't automatically learned to sit around other dogs, people, or traffic. Distractions change the difficulty completely.

05

WHAT TO DO INSTEAD

Teach it low distraction first. Add one challenge at a time --distance, duration, or distraction- not all three. If your dog's failing repeatable, back off and make it easier. Practice in different places so it actually sticks.v

BOTTOM LINE

Freedom should grow with reliability. Structure helps your dog get there.
